My Top 20 Korean Rappers (To Ring in 2020)

It’s once again en vouge to make lists of top rappers. This is a past time as old as pen and paper. People making lists of their favorite things, and in this case favorite MCs. However, I think the sudden resurgence of “Best MCs” lists in the past few months started after Jermaine Dupri‘s indictment of rappers, particularly female rappers, post-1995.

Drunken Tiger - YET (cover art)

‘YET.’ single and music video pre-released off Drunken Tiger’s tenth LP

The final album of Korean hiphop’s legend Drunken Tiger is slowly coming to light. This pre-release, ‘YET.‘, was produced by Loptimist.

This pre-release off Drunken Tiger‘s tenth full-length album is a hiphop track that will not only satisfy his fans but also the new generation of K-hiphop fans. It is an autobiographical track; Tiger JK raps about all the hardships he has been through. After ‘Feel gHood Muzik: The 8th Wonder’ (2009), Tiger joined hands with producer Loptimist again.

Since his debut in 1998 with ‘Year of the Tiger’, he has convincingly conveyed many things through his unique way of storytelling. His goal was to emphasize that “hiphop is not only a fleeting trend, but music that is based on people’s experiences.” For this new song, Tiger experimented a bit, working with taepyeongso player Wan-gyoo Kang. Feel Ghood Music’s talented women Ann One and BIBI supported him in the chorus.

Drunken Tiger’s previous nine albums were all valuable records of life. Even during painful times like suffering from myelitis, or facing a conflict with his label, Tiger JK kept going straight ahead. And so, he is steadily going his way. If anyone, Tiger JK stands representative for Korean hiphop.
In the 20-year-old Korean hiphop scene, he has been making music for 18 years. Aside from the substantial meaning of this two-digit number, his albums ruled the hiphop scene and drew the public’s interest to it. When Drunken Tiger first appeared, at the end of the century, people saw a truly drunken tiger. And now, he is going back to “the time when the Tiger was rapping.”
