Microdot – Exclusive Interview

On April 23, I sat down with independent artist Microdot for an exclusive video interview.  We discussed topics such as his music career after Show Me the Money 4, his upcoming album (and the featured artists), his international tour experience, the globalization of “Downbad.” movement, and his upcoming projects.  A special shoutout to Astro Vancity for inviting me to Microdot’s Vancouver show.  You can check out the exclusive interview and concert footage here!

Intro)
G.R.Boy((The track was produced by Giriboy.))

Verse 1)
Even before I entered elementary school
Every week on one weekday, my dad took me by the hand
and went with me to a bathhouse in the neighborhood
Dad’s washcloth really hurt

But what I feared more than that
was nothing other than
sharks. When I was six years old,
I believed that a shark was living in the cold pool

Uh, I even thought that
my pee-pee could get bitten
But other kids of my age
didn’t believe my words, I regret it

They had fun playing, and on top of that
a few of them even came wearing swimming goggles
So they did play to chill but I [was afraid of].
the shark that had to be hiding somewhere, can’t see((This can either mean that he couldn’t see the shark that was hiding, or that he couldn’t be seen in the cold pool because he was afraid))

I was only in the warm pool
After ten hot minutes,
my skin was wrinkly and my dad gestured me [to come out].
At the bathhouse, I looked down and gloomy

Inside, I think I actually envied the other kids
who weren’t afraid of the shark
I was quite naive [back then],
I wanted to play in the cold pool too

Chorus)
I believed that a shark was living in the cold pool
Man, I too know that it’s not true
Of course I don’t believe in the mesh bag grandpa((Fictive creature similar to a goblin, used for scaring kids; when children wouldn’t listen to their parents they’d tell them that the mesh bag grandfather would come and take them away in his bag)) either, retard
I am more scared of myself than of a shark

Hook)
Great white shark, mako shark
Because I was scared, I sat still while the others played
Great white shark, mako shark
I was scared of the pool’s inside

Verse 2)
Now, no matter which bathhouse I go to,
I know that there’s no f*cking shark in the cold pool
If you’re listening to this, don’t go to the place in Juyep-dong
I peed into the pool

And one of my wishes these days is
to use an invisibility skill((A skill from MMORPGS and other games)) and go into the women’s bath
A ‘mop head’,((Mocking term for people with dreadlocks because it looks like they’re wearing a mop on their head)) an idiot who smokes
e-cigarettes and Mild Seven at the same time((He’s sarcastically making fun of himself))

Those who played me meanly and unfairly,
I forever curse them to have car accidents((Supposedly a diss against Tablo for letting Incredivle do ‘Oppa’s Car’ on SMTM instead of Superbee))
Rappers bitch about too much
What if I have to go to hiphop prison for damaging [the image of] MCs?

Well, what, what, so what man?!
Then Korean hiphop is f*cked as sh*t and will be ruined
This is all I can say, I’m evil
Because now there is no shark in the cold pool

Verse 3: Black Nut)
I square my narrow shoulders in front of the cold pool
Between my legs is a fearless dolphin((Several very courageous people interpreted this as another diss against Tablo, seeing it as a reference to his daughter Haru liking dolphins, but they noted that they might be over-interpreting things since this is not a clear reference and Black Nut might be using the word dolphin simply because the song is about a shark))
So what if I’m bitten a bit? I don’t step back
I’m not scared anymore because I’m all grown-up too now

I’ve become an adult, I’m not a fool anymore
Seeing the rappers I yearned for in reality,
regardless of rap, what I felt first was that like Jung-in((Korean singer))
they all have nothing but politics in their noggins((Pun on ‘jung-chi’ which means politics but is also the name of singer Jung-in’s husband, Jo Jung-chi))

Now I understand Swings-hyung’s words a bit
Korean hiphop is nothing but politics((Cjamm mentions this too in ‘신기루’))
I won’t stick my tongue into your assh*le
Like the best days of the woman by your side, you’re just an Oldboy((Supposedly another diss directed at Tablo saying that he’s old; his wife Kang Hyejung’s heyday was when she starred in the movie ‘Oldboy’;
people also noted that the song was released on the couple’s 6th wedding anniversary))

Don’t use your head, you’re not a b-boy((to use one’s head literally means ‘to spin one’s head’ in Korean, thus it’s a reference to head spinning; also a parallelism with ‘Oldboy’ in previous line))
You’re a rapper, so please do what you’re supposed to already
I’ll give you Mercilons.((‘the Pill’, insult implying that they’re not real men; see following line as well)) If you come at me,
what you guys will see is blood,((also reference to a woman’s period, see previous line as well)) only that

Chorus)

Hook x2)

Move The Crowd

[Recap] Move The Crowd – Chapters 17-18

Read my recap of hiphop webtoon Move The Crowd’s chapters seventeen and eighteen.

[x_custom_headline type=”left” level=”h1″ looks_like=”h4″]인맥힙합 (3+4) (Connections Hiphop (3+4))[/x_custom_headline]

Don Mills reminds Deepflow where they met before and the latter finally remembers him.
Back to the present and the main character. Doosik is doing his job as a bartender, still blaming Skratch for failing to get the job as a “host MC”. As the two are fighting, they notice a guy who lies to a girl about being close to Vasco just to impress her. Skratch says that in his opinion that kind of people are the worst and that they are doing what’s called “connections hiphop”, claiming they know some famous rapper to be popular. When Doosik asks him what “connections hiphop” is, he replies: “Someone who is f*cking unskilled, knows a shit load of rappers and shows off with that.”
Back at home, Doosik thinks about those words and realizes that Skratch is right. Knowing many famous rappers doesn’t mean that Doosik himself will get some of their fame too. He is determined to do his thing until he is acknowledged and decides to make a mixtape.
We see 2SIK recording his mixtape and then going out to distribute it. In the midst of doing so, he meets Don Mills …

Doosik greets Don Mills and hands him his mixtape. Don Mills is reminded of his own efforts in the past and greets Doosik friendly, even asking for his number to give him feedback. As he is being exited and happy about the incident, Doosik sees Jiyun with another guy who he suspects to be her boyfriend. However, he tells himself that he shouldn’t be minding a girl and goes off to distribute more of his CDs.
As he tries to distribute them in front of a concert venue, he sees BewhY, Microdot, and Black Nut who are being followed by a huge crowd. 2SIK dreams of becoming as popular as them one day and has to shake off sudden thoughts of Jiyun and her possible boyfriend.
Meanwhile, Chulmin finds out everything about Doosik and becomes visibly angry when he hears that Doosik is acquainted with Jiyun.
2SIK who is still distributing his CDs is getting more and more pissed off with those people who leech off famous rappers’ fame and swears to himself that he shall never become like them.
At Vismajor’s studio, Don Mills and Deepflow listen to 2SIK’s mixtape and like his fresh style, so Don Mills messages 2SIK …

At the end of chapter eighteen, the authors have left the following note:

Everyone probably has their own criteria, but in our opinion there currently are no rappers who are doing “connections hiphop”. We think this way because unskilled rappers who have made themselves known thanks to connections shine briefly like a mirage and then disappear.

  • 2SIK’s lyrics go: 2sik gon expose ya motherfuckin posers | You guys who are getting beat all the time are no bulldozer | Hol’ up, this is not a diss against Swings | but directed at the retards who copy his song! | You’re disgusting and uncool. Getting tattoos and grills | and want to be like Chicanos or blacks, | who are you to represent Korean hiphop, asshole? Instead of your Supreme tee | which you bough with your mom’s money, | the smell of my plain Giordano tee, check that | It’s the pheramones which gay assholes | who think that the stage is a fashion show will never have | The women who smell them are naked before they know / ay~ wussup!
  • A fangirl asks Black Nut if he has a girlfriend to which he replies with “No,” and thinks “For me, there is only Beenzino!”
  • Doosik has saved Don Mills’ contact details under “Don Mills-hyung“.
