Verse 1)
Hello, twenty-year-old me, you’re not the least bit interested
in economics, so why did you join that department?
That’s probably why you think that you’ve blown your college life
and you’re not even interested in the famous lectures

hello, 스무 살의 나님, 넌 경제학에 관심
하나도 없으면서 그 과 왜 갔니?
그니까 네가 대학생활이 붕 떴단 생각이 들고
한국 최고의 교수님들의 명강의들도

of the best professors of Korea
However, if you just vaguely kill time in a daze,
you will regret it. You’re not a high schooler
I don’t want you to do anything that makes you feel sorry

흥미가 안 가는 거겠지 아마.
하지만 흐릿하게 시간만 죽이며 멍하게 있다간
후회하게 될걸. 너는 고등학생이 아냐
미래의 너 자신에게 미안할 일은

towards the future you. Your rap on the radio
a few weeks before the SAT, which was praised by [x_extra info=”popover” title=”Fact” info_trigger=”hover” info_place=”top” info_content=”Korean hiphop team active from 1997-2001 who did gangster rap”]Gangtholic[/x_extra],
was quite impressive. Well, I can’t put my finger on it and don’t know
if you could be called a genius, but you seem to be rather talented in that direction

See, there’s no one else who raps as classily as you
On top of it, someone who has tried a great variety of music like you
is literally [x_extra info=”popover” title=”Reference” info_trigger=”hover” info_place=”top” info_content=”to Verbal Jint’s song ‘희귀종’ off the same album. The Hanja literally mean ‘rare’, ‘precious’, and ‘species’.”]a rare species[/x_extra]
Dig into it deeper! It could be that after a few years

너만큼 세련되게 랩하는 사람이 없거든
게다가 너만큼 다양한 음악을 접한 녀석은
문자 그대로 희귀종이니까
더 깊숙이 파고들어가봐, 혹시 네가

you will have become someone like a big tree
in this scene, who knows? Now, you
likely won’t feel that way at all. Of course,
it can be difficult on your own, so go to a place

where people get together who have the same hobby
You’ll discover a world you haven’t known of until now
And after about two years, you release an album
I strongly suggest [x_extra info=”popover” title=”Fact” info_trigger=”hover” info_place=”top” info_content=”Verbal Jint’s EP from 2001″]’Modern Rhymes'[/x_extra] as title

My worn-out notebook was filled to the brink

못 했지만 어렵게 구한 CD들로
배우고 익혔네, 본토의 lyrics and flow

My worn-out notebook was filled to the brink
with rhymes. I have seen the impossible, one
after the other, change into reality
It is still the same now

손때 탄 공책 안 가득히
써 내려간 rhyme, 불가능이 하나둘씩
현실로 바뀌는 걸 난 봤지
그건 지금도 마찬가지

Verse 2: Beenzino)

34 or 36, you’re lookin’ for a dirty bitch
However, of all things, your girlfriend is a Catholic who wants to preserve her virginity
Catholic, but you want her to lick your dick
Don’t be greedy again, you haven’t even kissed before

34 or 36, you’re lookin’ for a dirty bitch
근데 하필 네 여친은 혼전의 순결을 지키려고 하는

Do not lose one thing: the peace of your mind
There’s no need to hurry that much, man
Because when there is something you really want, and it is nothing you force upon yourself
but it is something true to you, then you will obtain it

잃지마 한 가지 peace of your mind

Don’t mind the rappers you envy and the well-off hyungs
and keep up your vibes
Because when there is something you really want, and it is nothing you force upon yourself
but it is something true to you, then you will obtain it, yeah

Translator’s Note: this song is not about women in general, it is about female BJs on afreecaTV. There have long been rumors regarding those BJs and abortion, so when this song came out it caused a huge uproar, people tried to find out who the BJ mentioned in the song was. Some criticized the track for seemingly generalizing, labelling every female BJ as an easy woman who has had an abortion before. (Check YouTube or visit this tumblr with gifs and photos to get an impression of what’s happening on average live streams by female BJs.) Due to the huge uproar, Defconn published the following on his homepage: “‘She’s Having an Abortion’ is not based on real stories.” He asked: “Have you ever considered “abortion” as a metaphor for the amputation or destruction of being aware of materialism and lookism?” (*) Meaning, he denied that the story is about any real BJ and suggests that he used “abortion” as a metaphor to criticize the fact that BJs only care about making money and their fans only care about their looks. This put a stop to the controversy.

Intro)
Yeah uh, Defconn
This could be a true story
(Beenzino:) Fuck life! Fuck ’em all, man!

Hook)
I kill my body and soul
I don’t like myself who has become desensitized
I kill my body and soul
My life is shit anyway

Verse 1)
She sleeps clenching her hurting belly
“When will the wounds on my dirtied body heal?”
When she opens her eyes she looks for cigarettes again
She is used to pouring herself [a bowl of] seaweed soup all alone((seaweed soup is traditionally eaten on birthdays; this implies that she’s alone on her birthday))

She’s already had her second abortion this year
She can’t count the guys she’s had
She’s a popular BJ((broadcasting jockey; a host of internet videos)) on the internet
Her fans((lit.: otakus)) don’t know that she’s actually this kind of a girl

She plasters on make-up and paints flowers on the wallpaper((possible reference to female BJs having flower wallpapers as background during their live streams))
For the older men((lit.: oppas)) to see, she puts on an extremely short mini skirt,
pretending it’s a mistake that her panty is showing
Is that the painful reality of getting a luxury bag?

Her first word to being pregnant, which she’s become used to: “Shit!”
And to the guy who put off the condom because he was in the mood: “Shit!”
Taking her headphones in a hurry,
today, she’s craving the damn balloons((On the Korean streaming website AfreecaTV, so-called “star-balloons” are the digital currency which viewers can give to BJs they like. Many girls used the site to show off their bodies and earn virtual money.)) again

Hook)

Verse 2: Akira)
Yeah, I’m popular at school
I’m definitely different from what my parents think
A handbag instead of a school bag, handmade clothes
Leaving the nagging behind I go out again, driving another nail into my mother’s heart (shit)

The hellish third year of high school, instead of the studying that I quit:
Sex and Zen((Hong Kong movie)) from the movies, Gotham welcomes me
I’m broken, the price for letting me go
was the wriggling of one life that I’ll erase from my belly

I’m dirty, when I sober up I’m a laughing stock
Yeah, I’m the plaything of men here and there anyway
Now I’m not even scared of this or that
I don’t have money either, they’re laughing at me who has given herself up

It doesn’t matter if I’m walking the wrong way or on a thorny path now
With the sun in my back I close the curtains
In the unlit room I clench my teeth in pain
and stay up all night holding my breath, shit …

Verse 3: Beenzino)
Bearing a mishap once to avoid something worse is all lies, fake whore
Why wear a bra if you’re gonna take it off anyway? Huh?
You say it’s difficult? Let me look at your bag a bit
LV((Louis Vuitton)) or G((Gucci))? Damn, is it real?

Even your bf((best friend)) doesn’t know [the truth behind] that bag’s mystery (that’s right)
Only the guys you service know it
Oh, privacy? You don’t have the right to say such a word
For you it’s you, only you who is important

Abortion. Saying it hurts, you go: “Ah!”
The baby can only think “Ah!” You got that?
The small hands’ most wanted
Even though it calls for its mother, it’s too quiet, shh!

Earn a lot, as long as you can
As long as your body that will soon rot is still beautiful
Tight cheeks, lips and breasts
How long will they last? Stop it now!

Hook)

Bridge)
Don’t laugh at me but tell me
who made me this way?
(You’re saying you’ll do the same, right? Right?)
Every night, the invisible sound of crying
keeps me from sleeping

Verse 4: Yankie)
Today too, she fixes her make-up and thickly puts on lipstick
Her feeble gaze becomes more glamorous
A transformation as if done by mystic black magic
About this much is fine, Miss Lee hurries to work

“Do you miss me?” Compared to her clumsy imitation of overseas Koreans
she manages her relationships perfectly, she sweet-talks men
Keeps them by her side, dulled wolves have always been docile
Hooked by her face, body, and mind, they bite her fishing line again

Get ya money right, get your body rock
She already does everything for money, who profits from whom?
Finding a sponsor who has some money, one can apparently marry well
When she thinks this is the one, she starts flirting, clumsy gambling

Life’s a deal, the risk she chose are dry heaves((this hints at a pregnancy))
but she was happy
Uh, take some bill, forget about greetings already
A sprout((can also mean: baby/child)) in the life cut as short as that brief relationship and kills

Hook)

Outro x2)
I kill my body and soul

Beenzino - North American Tour 2015 San Francisco Concert Review

Beenzino North American Tour 2015: San Francisco

On Saturday, December 5, Illionaire Records artist Beenzino performed at The Factory in San Francisco as part of his North American Tour. This concert review was made possible thanks to Platinum K Shows and CHL Entertainment. Proceed on to read about my Beenzino concert experience!

2

Who is Beenzino?

Born in South Korea on September 12, 1987, Beenzino (real name: Lim Sung-bin) moved to New Zealand and spent his childhood in Christchurch (which explains his fluency in English) where he discovered his passion for hiphop music through North American emcees such as Tupac, Biggie Smalls, and P. Diddy.  The artist moved back to Seoul for middle school and later went on to graduate from the College of Fine Arts (Sculpture) at Seoul National University.

8
Beenzino officially debuted in 2009 as the rapper of hiphop group P’ Skool (notably, with producer Primary).  I highly encourage you to take a listen to their album [Daily Apartment].

In 2010, the rapper collaborated with Beatbox DG in a hiphop group called Hot Clip.  In contrast to the jazzy, soul and swing rhythm in [Daily Apartment], The [Hot Clip] mixtape is a compilation of energetic rap and vocals laid over boom bap and notable beats such as Jay Z’s ‘I’m Ill.’

During the same year, Beenzino and his friend Shimmy Twice formed a jazz hiphop duo called Jazzyfact, which remains as one of my favorite projects by Beenzino.  Their mixtape [Life’s Life] is comprised of several hit tracks such as ‘Friday Move (TGIF),’ ‘Close To You,’ ‘Take A Little Time,’ and ‘각자의 새벽 (Each Person’s Dawn).’

On 2011, Beenzino officially shakes his hand with CEOs Dok2 and The Quiett and signed with Illionaire Records.  Just over a year after joining the rising independent label, Beenzino dropped his first solo EP titled [2 4 : 2 6] where he paints his life experiences that occurred between the age of 24 and 26.  With tracks like ‘Aqua Man,’ ‘Boogie On & On,’ and ‘If I Die Tomorrow,’ the album became a huge success, and was arguably one of his defining moments in Beenzino’s hiphop career.  Since then, he has been featured in a spectrum of hiphop and R&B tracks with artists like Zion. T, Dynamic Duo, Verbal Jint, B-Free, Epik High, Okasian, Primary, and Junggigo.

5
His mini-album [Up All Night EP], which dropped in July 2014, was a collaborative project with the designer brand WOOYOUNGMI’s Paris Collection (see our translated ‘Up All Night’ Interview with Naver Music).  Notable songs from the mini-album include the title track ‘How Do I look?‘ as well as ‘Mitch as F*CK‘ and ‘Up All Night.’  In addition to this mini album, Illionaire Records dropped their first compilation album [11:11] with successful tracks including the mega-hit ‘YGGR (연결고리) (ft. MC Meta)’ which won HIPHOPPLAYA Awards 2014 ‘Single of the Year.

In the recent months, the artist released a number of singles including ‘So What,’ ‘Break,’ and ‘We Are Going To‘ as a teaser to his upcoming album which is expected to drop later this month.

Beenzino at The Factory, San Francisco

Having seen Beenzino perform with Illionaire Records a handful of times in both South Korea and North America, I was excited to attend Beenzino’s solo concert in San Francisco. The artist had about 2 hours of scheduled stage time, which meant Beenzino would be playing more than just his popular tracks he would normally play at Illionaire concerts.  I was especially happy when learning that Korean producer and Jazzyfact co-member Shimmy Twice would be joining him on stage for the evening.

1
The concert was held at The Factory, a nightclub located in downtown San Francisco.  The layout of the club venue was as one would expect: a simple stage with a DJ booth and a large dance floor for the audience.  Although I was initially concerned about crowd congestion due to the layout of the concert, the staff was excellent in reserving the front area for VIP audience and press pass – there was plenty of breathing space as well as room to take photos and videos.

4
The crowd applauded as Shimmy Twice entered the stage and walked up to the DJ booth.  The lights dimmed and the first track played: ‘Jackson Pollock D*Ck‘ from his latest mini-album [Up All Night].  The applause soon became a thunderous cheer as Beenzino walked down the spiral staircase towards the stage and began performing his first verse.  Unfortunately, his nerves got the best of him and forgot his lyrics.  He apologized to the crowd, explaining that he was especially nervous due to the intimidating staircase he walked down from (see our exclusive video).  Shimmy Twice restarts the beat and Beenzino was able to pick himself back up:

For two hours straight, Beenzino performed essentially all his tracks from [2 4 : 2 6] (2011) as well as from [Up All Night EP] (2014).  With Shimmy Twice by his side, the duo performed a number of Jazzyfact songs including ‘각자의 새벽,’ Smoking Dreams,’ and ‘아까워.’  In addition, he performed his recent tracks ‘So What (어쩌라고),’ ‘Break,’ ‘We Are Going To,’ and even a few unreleased ones from his upcoming full-length album, which is expected to drop later this month.

With a spectrum of tracks he is featured in, Beenzino performed a number of fan favourites such as ‘Primary – 멀어 (Far Away),’ ‘Epik High – Born Hater,’ ‘PEEJAY – I Get Lifted,’ and ‘Urban Zakapa – Get.’

Two quick hours passed by and the artist said his goodbyes before leaving the stage with Shimmy Twice.  The audience soon chanted “encore!” and “Beenzino,” requesting him to return to stage.  In less than a minute, Beenzino and Shimmy Twice returned to stage for the encore set.  The artist brought out the Illionaire medley and performed tracks like ‘연결고리 (YGGR),’ ‘Profile,’ ‘내가,’ ‘가 (Go),’ and ‘ILLIONAIRE Gang.’  Beenzino concluded the show with the Jazzyfact track ‘Always Awake.’

11
As mentioned previously, this was my first time at a Beenzino solo concert, and I was certainly not disappointed.  He seemed very comfortable interacting with the crowd.  What I was most impressed was the fact that the artist gave his 100% from start to finish – one of our writers commented that “[Beenzino] looked seven pounds lighter by the end of the show!

3
9
Following the Beenzino solo concert, we checked out the afterparty which was held at SF Origin Nightclub.  When we arrived at the venue, the line was long as expected, but we were able to skip the wait and enter the club without any hassle (shoutout to Paul!).  Being that this was a Beenzino afterparty, the majority of the crowd was Korean.  We were pleasantly surprised to see Beenzino and his crew had made it to the afterparty.  As he entered the DJ booth, the crowd swarmed towards the front and took photos and videos with their phones in the air.  After his brief introduction, Beenzino performed ‘연결고리 (YGGR)‘ and enjoyed the rest of the evening at his table with his entourage.  All in all it was a fun evening for everyone present.

A special thanks to Platinum K Shows and CHL Entertainment for inviting HiphopKR to attend this solo concert!

Intro)
Let it show, let it show
Stop talkin’ now and show it
Let it show, let it show
Stop talkin’ now and show it

Bounce, bounce, bounce
You gotta bounce like
Bounce, bounce, bounce
You gotta bounce like

Hook)
Tatts on arms, back, chest, go and let it show
If you got swag stop talkin’ bout it, let it show
Girls in the club, if you got ass let it show
If you got cash then you know you gotta let it show

Show, show, now go and let it show
Show, show, now go and let it show
Show, show, now go and let it show
Hi-Lite, Illionaire, you know we gonna let it show

Verse 1)
I’m in the house like monthly rent
The damp temperature in the club is totally tropical
Someone order drinks, some expensive alcohol, open it
Go up to a pretty girl and clink glasses right away

Yeah, party hard like your birthday
We’re honey bees like Wu Tang
Born in the year of the ox,((B-Free was born 1985)) that bull shit Lamborghini Mercy
Now work it, shake it like an earthquake, hey

Let it show, let it show, your everything
She says, “It’s give and take”
(OK) I can’t give you a lot
but for now take this Jägerbomb, tonight let me blow your mind

Yes, I light things up a bit,((Could be a pun on “light up” which has several meanings, so this part can also be translated as: “Yes, I dig it a bit” and might be implying that he likes to party/have fun/…)) Hi-Lite
I work hard and do well, hell yeah I fuck it right
All and everyone is busy having fun so
let it show, let it show, come on show me what you got

Hook)

Verse 2: Okasian)
It’s all about looks so I gotta let it show
If you got swag, fuck rappin’ bout it, just let it show
If you got cash, fuck braggin’ bout it, just spend it bruh, bruh
Fuck braggin’ bout it just spend it bruh

All talk and more talk, you’re quite fancy only on the surface
When you go to a year-end party you’ll talk blahblah of the past again, uh
I don’t believe what I haven’t seen, shut the fuck up
OK I’ll let it slide, empty your drink already

If you’re really hot in the club then take it off
Those who pretend to be well-behaved, please stop it now
Even if your breasts are small, there’s no need to be careful
You can keep your pretty bra on, just pull your skirts up

Uh, hit the ground with your ass and the ground returns it
I’m not joking, I don’t make jokes
When it comes to havin’ fun, we’re pros you’re amateurs
So lil mama let it show, tell ’em

Verse 3: Beenzino)
A navy MTM sweater and camouflage shorts
I’m fresher than a mufucker, hairstyle like Ryota Miyagi((Character from the manga/anime Slam Dunk))
Point guard,((Basketball position, another reference to Slam Dunk (see previous line too) )) the key to opening girls’ hearts
I don’t have a foreign car yet but I’m wild and young and free

Fuck that money, fuck that pop, fuck that DD((Dynamic Duo)) wannabes,
Fuck that smartasses who steal my music, all of them
Who’s the underground king now? It’s a bit embarrassing
to say this myself but fuck it bitch it’s me now .. so ..

It’s on me, the alcohol is all free
Nothing’s forever but my stock price is still high
2010 feature king, got 7,000 with my first EP
And thanks to a nationwide tour 350 in one week

Damn, let’s celebrate, man I’m only 26
Hip hop has saved me from the hell that is unemployment
And you never been this far like me, fuck broke, RIP
Hi-Lite, Illionaire, our music is always alive
