NY.LA - Unripe Ignorance (album cover)

NY.LA releases ‘Unripe Ignorance’ EP

NY.LA has released his first official mini album titled ‘Unripe Ignorance‘ as well as the title track’s music video.

It is also the first album he is releasing as ‘NY.LA’ since changing his name from ‘Edward’. He is an artist that cannot be described by a single genre. The atmosphere and basic sounds he creates unite several complex genres as one harmonious work of art. The future R&B genre is probably the label closest to his music, but this album also includes elements of postmodern jazz and 90s hiphop.

Listening to ‘Unripe Ignorance’ with its unusual stories and overall dark tones is apparently similar to watching a movie like ’50 Shades of Grey’.

At first listen, the EP might sound crude and vulgar, but once you know that the lyrics of the first track ‘Blue Pill Jazz’ play an essential role in the overall album, you will fall for the socially conscious commentaries and stories.

‘Can’t Find No Reason’ is the title track and features hot composer and singer DAVII on the piano and vocals. Besides two singles of his own, he has composed Heize’s ‘STAR‘, as well as songs for BEAST (now: Highlight) and Jeon Soyeon (in Unpretty Rapstar). This track is the most upbeat of the whole album.
‘See Saw Margery Daw’ is a 90s hiphop track remade with horror elements.
The dark-dreamy ‘Konjac (곤냑)’ is the most intense track of the album. It is entirely sung by producer/singer-songwriter d.oh who is based in Toronto, Canada and has a loyal fanbase.
The final track ‘Sluts on a Thursday’ stays true to the album’s decadent concept and ends it on a somewhat lighter note.

NY.LA raises societal issues through his own experiences that he describes in his lyrics, similar to The Weeknd and Joey Badass. However, he is not criticizing society (“political music”), but just calling attention to specific issues (“conscious music”).

In the last few years, NY.LA’s style has changed and his style that ignores any genres will keep finding its way step by step. Listeners can look forward to the various stories NY.LA will treat in his music.
