YunB - YunB (album cover)

YunB releases first mini album ‘YunB’

YunB of Hi-Lite Records has released his first EP titled ‘YunB’ as well as the music video for the title track ‘2099 (Feat. Kid Travis & MaseWonder)’.

YunB was born in New York, then went to elementary and middle school in Seoul and returned to New York for high school and university. His debut album ‘YunB’ reflects his current self, the various experiences and feelings he gained from the two cities New York and Seoul.

Hiphop has become the lifestyle of many young people in the world. YunB naturally came into contact with the hiphop culture in New York and grew up alongside hiphop fans. Maybe that is why his music is so straightforward and organicly vivid. As he raps in ‘New York II’ and ’50K’, to him music is not something that was intentionally made by imitating someone else but a natural by-product of the process of accepting and learning the hiphop music and culture.

In the heartless, fierce city life of chasing success, the track ‘산인’ (lit.: mountain folks) opens the eyes to the importance and beauty of nature. This remarkable topic of the title track is continued similarly in ‘Ritalin’. The track mixes the life of constantly seeking something new and the true inner feelings that deny this. YunB’s English and YonYon‘s Japanese rap make for a profound and mysterious combination that creates a dreamy atmosphere. This unique atmosphere that can be called YunB’s signature sound can be heard in the whole album, including ‘Skrt’ and ‘U’. A dreamy progress of chords topped by a strong beat and rapping seems to represent the life of the young generation that grows up in the busy city, bearing dreams and love.

YunB produced and mixed this EP himself, including as much of his style as possible. Last year he debuted with the single ‘Runaway, Pt. 1‘, then continuously released several more singles and music videos. With his first EP in his name ‘YunB‘, he keeps reinforcing his own philosophy and creativity.

[Intro] Paloalto: There is a lot to be learned from his music. / I think he is this generation’s new A Tribe Called Quest.
[Text] Which rappers do the greatest rappers of South Korea respect?

Huckleberry P: Hello. (laughs)
Palo: Hello. We’re seeing each other often.
Huck P: He’s my boss, this is a bit difficult … (laughs)

Huck P: How come you’re interested in DJing these days?
Palo: I do like listening to music and I listen to various genres. I often thought that it would be great if I played music and many other people enjoyed it together with me, sharing that feeling. For example, Q-Tip, who I respect in the US scene, raps and composes and does DJing. There is no rule or anything that says I can only rap, and to me hiphop is my life, so …

Huck P: What does ‘respect’ mean to you?
Palo: To me, respect among musicians is to like the others music and to value their musicality.

Huck P: As the “Master” today, who is the rapper you respect?
Palo: Thank you for considering me a “Master.”
Huck P: Of course you are! Our country’s “Master” MC. (laughs awkwardly)
Palo: Yeah, so thank you for that. This artist, I think he has all the basics down. YunB raps, does DJing, he understands the harmony between rapping and the beat and really knows how to make music. I think he is this generation’s new A Tribe Called Quest.
Huck P: Wow, that is a huge compliment!
Palo: Yes, he might feel burdened by this but I wanted to introduce him with style to many people.

Palo: Let’s listen to YunB together, the rapper I respect!

YunB - Robabank (single cover)

YunB releases single and MV ‘Robabank (Feat. Lil Cherry)’

YunB of Hi-Lite Records has released a new gangster trap single and music video.

Last year, YunB debuted with the single ‘Runaway, Pt. 1‘ followed by ‘Runaway, Pt. 2‘. This year in March he was the only featured artist on the album ‘더 아름다운 것 (More Beautiful Thing)‘ by talented singer-songwriter Joon-il Jung (정준일), and he received attention from the worldwide jazz hop community by releasing the Nujabes-dedicated track ‘Yayo (Feat. MaseWonder)’ for free.
YunB is still a young artist and on the search for the roots of his music, one has to go back in time farther than expected. His style that combines jazz chords with recently popular trap sounds was influenced by 60s/70s black music and also has similarities to 90s hiphop.

In the single ‘Robabank‘, YunB reinterprets southern gangster trap. At first glance it seems to be a grim track about the hard life of tough gangsters, but looking more closely you will find indications of satire here and there. The bright colors on the cover artwork, the soft and calm progress of the melody and chords, and the lax music video that seems like a fake documentary. These three elements turn the whole track around.
‘Robabank’ also features newcoming rapper Lil Cherry who helps raise the catchy charm of this track with which YunB brings back the humor to Korean hiphop.
