[Translators’ Notes] Rapper Car with San E – Part 1
The second season of AKATV‘s Rapper Car is here with the first special guest San E!
San E, who recently released the song ‘Sugar and Me‘ together with Raina, is surprised at his home by his newly appointed manager-for-a-day Kjun who then inspects his longtime friend’s place (both of them are in the crew Overclass). As they drive to the location of San E’s outdoor schedule that day, the two talk about how San E started out as a rapper and his diss track to Verbal Jint. San E also performs “the song of his life,” ‘산선생님‘ (Teacher San).

Part 1
Make sure to click on ‘CC’ to activate the subtitles!
https://youtu.be/hxyY4APlS5Y
- Right in the beginning, when Kjun introduces “today’s guest” aka San E’s manager Hojoon Choi, the Korean on-screen texts read: “Isn’t he Kjun’s younger brother? Did San E gain weight? Is it Shindong? lol Show us San E!”
- When San E says, “I nearly flashed you,” the Korean on-screen text shows chilis. This is because the colloquial Korean term for ‘penis’ (i.e. dick) is literally ‘chili’ (고추, gochu).
- Kjun introduces himself as the manager, speaking formally, then suddenly switches back to colloquial speech, asking San E if he’s going to go out in those clothes. The two are actually the same age and have known each other for a long time, so it is natural that they speak colloquially, it is just funny how Kjun switches back and forth between speech levels however he feels is convenient.
- “San E’s food” refers to his song ‘못 먹는 감 (Sour Grapes)‘ with Mad Clown. And yes, the fruit is actually a persimmon, not a grape, as the Korean title is literally “Inedible Persimmons.”
- ‘What Every BODY is Saying‘ is a book by former FBI officer Joe Navarro and teaches about reading body language.
- When Kjun asks why the place has become so clean, the on-screen text stealthily adds: “… Has a woman been here?“
- As Kjun opens the door for the stylists, the Korean on-screen text describes him as: He’s acting as if he’s in his own home.
- While paragliding, San E sings “Like An Airplane” which is a reference to the song ‘마치 비행기‘ with Juicy Candy and Gary.
- The phrase “San E over the mountain” can be read literally as “A mountain over a mountain,” since ‘산’ (san) means ‘mountain’ in Korean.
- At 2:41 when Kjun welcomes the stylists, you can see the pieces of paper with motivational texts on the wall in the entrance hall.
- The phrase “Let’s rip flesh and carve bones!” might sound a bit strange in English, simply understand it as a metaphor for working really, really hard.
- Kjun is described twice as an “intelligent anti(-fan)” (지능형 안티, jineunghyeong anti). The term refers to anti-fans that pretend to be fans who lack common sense and write insensitive comments. (Source)
- The line “Defeated San E” reads more literally “San E suffers one doubtful defeat.” The phrase ‘의문의 1패’ (uimunui hanpae) refers to an indirect defeat. In this case, Kjun says people dissed San E because they thought he studied fashion design yet couldn’t dress stylishly, but this shouldn’t bother San E since he never studied fashion design. Yet, it still means that he can’t dress well, resulting in his, indirect, loss.
- Kjun literally says “Apply it!” referring to Drunken Tiger’s ‘Monster (Korean Ver.)‘ which starts with the line: “Drunken Tiger Balm, apply the balm/ointment of music to the wounds of your hurt heart,” i.e. listen to Drunken Tiger’s music to heal your heartache.
- San E’s diss track to Verbal Jint is ‘재미쎄요’ (Having Fun?). Listen to it here. Amateur rapper San E uploaded the track on Hiphop Playa and Verbal Jint replied to it, acknowledging San E’s rap skills and later having him join Overclass. During the 2nd episode of HiphopLE’s talk concert with Verbal Jint, San E even performed the diss track live in front of VJ who had no clue it would happen (watch it here). (Source)
- Some notes on the lyrics of San E’s ‘산선생님’ (Teacher San) (only for the part performed in the video):
- “He was into cartoons” literally reads as “He sang ‘tondegirigiri'” which refers to the opening song of the anime ‘Time Travel Tondekeman’ which was very popular in Korea when it aired in the 90s.
- “Singing cartoon songs is what he did” – The line literally goes “chikichikichakachakacho, this is the crap he sang” referring to the opening song of the Korean animation ‘Fly! Superboard!’ (날아라 슈퍼보드, narara syupeobodeu).
Look forward to the next four episodes of Rapper Car with San E!
New episodes are uploaded every Friday at 10 AM KST, subtitles will then be added within the following seven to ten days.
[Translators’ Notes] Rapper Car with Superbee
Following up are our translators’ notes for AKATV‘s Rapper Car with the second special guest, Superbee!
Superbee, who has already participated in AKATV’s Swaggers Made in USA, mostly talks with Kjun about dissing, the one thing that probably everyone is reminded of when hearing the name ‘Superbee’. The rapper explains in detail his reasons for dissing Tablo, as well as why he revealed his phone number. He takes a few calls from fans and raps several songs live.

- Read the translation and watch the lyric video of Superbee’s ‘냉탕에 상어 (Feat. Black Nut)’ (Shark in the Cold Pool) here.
Episode 2/2
https://youtu.be/Kec8oW3TBNU
- The friend of the first caller, Superbee’s “anti-fan,” goes through a really funny process of changing his voice and way of speech: first, he sounds imitating and dangerous and uses colloquial speech, sounding tough and rude. Then, he suddenly speaks politely and nice when asking if he is talking to the real Superbee, and finally changes from using aegyo (cute speech) into fanboy mode.
- The female (?) caller mishears ‘interview’ for AV which stands for ‘adult video’ and is a Japanese term for ‘porn’.
- Superbee actually says, “I don’t sign any contract without myunDo,” but the line was too short to fit all of this in.
- Notes on Superbee’s ‘Me N My Gimchi (Feat. Reefa)‘:
- “More perverted than a lightsaber” is a pun on ‘perverted’ and ‘lightsaber’; in Korean, ‘perverted’ can literally mean ‘to light up’, resulting in the ambiguous meaning “Brighter than a lightsaber.”
- “We don’t listen to what we’re told, your dongsaengs” is how the line actually goes, defying the customary respectful attitude towards sunbaes (older, more experienced people) which is, truth be told, often abused to bully the younger ones.
- OVC (Overclass) is a hiphop crew headed by Warmman and includes famous members like Verbal Jint, Swings, and San E. They have not released anything since 2010 but announced to resume activities this year. (*)

Episode 1/2
https://youtu.be/MKIjq5Yyols
- The first song Microdot performs is ‘Goal Keeper‘ (with Dok2).
- The second song is ‘Love Letter‘ (with Sanchez).
Episode 2/2
https://youtu.be/g-y_C1DkqGE
- So, the stage name Microdot was made of micro + dot, while micro comes from micro scooter which Microdot often rode as a child and dot from the mole of the engineer in the studio where Microdot first recorded.
- In this second part, he first raps ‘Homage‘, a track completely in English off his ‘MICROTAPE EP‘.
- When they talk about how Sanchez does not do any chores, Kjun wants to imply that Sanchez thinks that he helped Microdot get popular through SMTM and thus Microdot should do the chores in return.
- Note: Korean people call their older brothers “hyung” but due to the non-Korean influence, Microdot calls Sanchez “Chez“.
- Sanchez is shocked that his brother has learned the word “개소리” (kaesori) which is made up of the words ‘개’ (kae, lit. dog) which is used as an intensifier rendering the word into a swearword, and of ‘소리’ (sori, lit. sound). It translates to ‘nonsense/stupid talk/rubbish’ (*) and is not that bad of a cussword, actually (in my opinion at least).
- When Kjun says, “I think I had a wrong impression,” he actually says “I was thinking about the movie ‘Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War'” (South Korea, 2004) which is, as the title suggests, about the beautiful relationship between two brothers during the Korean War. So Kjun implies that he thought the two Shin brothers had a great relationship just like the two brothers in the movie.
- “But I went fu- … very close” — Yes, he nearly said the Korean F-word. (This is definitely worse than 개소리).
- The last song of the two episodes is ‘Celebrate‘ which features The Quiett, Babylon, and Sanchez (aka Fassnakuh).
Coming up are two single episodes, one with J.slow and Freelow, and one with Jung Sangsoo–look forward to them!

[x_custom_headline type=”left” level=”h1″ looks_like=”h3″ accent=”true”]Episodes and Translators’ Notes[/x_custom_headline]
Episode 1/2
https://youtu.be/J63BjR5KCUY
- The first track is ‘MC Sniper – BK Love (Feat. BK, Mr Bubble)‘ off MC Sniper’s first album. It was also part of the OST for the movie ‘Windstruck’.
- MC Sniper has coined the term ‘Goguryeo hiphop‘ with his second album ‘초행 (初行)’ (First Trip). It is not really clear what the term refers to, but MC Sniper has mentioned before during HiphopLE’s Talk Concert that after having made so much reggae music with BK and Skull, he had a ‘Korean’ phase as it was the trend at that time to include traditional Korean instruments into the music (he mentions Defconn and Onesun doing so) to create a Korean sound, i.e. Korean hiphop.
- MC Sniper cracks some “ajusshi gags” (아재 개그, ajae gag), i.e. old men’s gags, which is slang for lame jokes. When talking about Goguryeo hiphop, he says: “It failed, I totally went to Goguryeo,” and “Worse, I could have gone to Mongolia,” using the time distance as metaphor for how much it failed, a bit similar to saying “it went downhill” or “it went down the drain.”
- The second track is ‘사랑했잖아 (Feat. Loco, 손승연)‘ which MC Sniper performed on the first season of SMTM. It is a remake of LYn’s R&B track ‘사랑했잖아‘ (But We Were in Love). (You might have noticed, but the lyrics translations in the subtitles are very condensed as the rap is way too fast.)
- You can listen to MC Sniper’s ‘자메이카 보이’ (Jamaica Boy) here. It’s a reggae/old school track off his first album ‘So Sniper…‘.
- Together with his band, MC Sniper performed an acoustic version of ‘BK Love’ at Sangsang Madang this month on March 13.
Episode 2/2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgjQh-DYpj8
- The first track is ‘다시 뛰는 맥박’ (Pulse that Beats Again) off his album ‘B-Kite 1‘.
- Unfortunately, I could not find the video of Loco and SongRapper battling each other on SMTM, but you can watch SongRapper battling Lee Byeongryong aka A.C.Lee, a former member of 45RPM.
- The first track by SongRapper is ‘That Girl (Feat. Loco, Crybaby)‘. Kjun misunderstood the title as ‘대꾸리’ (read like: “that goory”) which refers to large quantities of soju. He says that MC Sniper being the root of Goguryeo hiphop lead him to think that the song was about drinking, because “[c]ommon pastimes among Goguryeo people were drinking, singing, or dancing.” (*)
- When MC Sniper says, “He (SongRapper) should have died from it!” he is making another joke. The word ‘gold-digger‘ in Korean is ‘꽃뱀’ (kkotbaem), literally a type of snake. MC Sniper actually says “He should have died from the (snake) bite!” but of course he does not mean it that way, he was just trying to crack another joke.
- MC Sniper and SongRapper’s new track together is ‘Fxxx All Ya‘.
- Note: Korean ‘netizens’ are known for expressing their opinions (?) very bluntly online, and most rappers/musicians do not read their comments.
- The second track by SongRapper is ‘한잔해 (Let’s Have A Drink) (Feat. Na Kyungwon of G Urban)’ off his single ‘Cheers For Good Life‘.
