Ambition Musik

The Quiett, ‘Ambition Musik was an idea sprung up after Kim Hyo-Eun was Eliminated’ | Commentary

Illionaire Records’ CEO The Quiett explains how Ambition Musik came to be and the relationship of Illionaire and Ambition Musik in the future.

Hip: Ambition Musik has officially launched. According to Changmo who appeared on Hiphopplaya Radio, the label was in preparation for quite a while. We’d like to hear the reason how the signed artists weren’t established as Illionaire but as ‘Ambition Musik’.

Q: It’s an idea we came up with while filming Show Me the Money 5. When Kim Hyo-Eun was eliminated from the mission of performing ‘Air2daQ, I had a lot of different thoughts.  When I thought about the future of this rapper, it seemed like it was a waste to leave him as is. That’s where the idea sprung up from.

Hip: Can we assume that a separate label was launched because Illionaire is seen as a complete unit with Dok2, The Quiett, and Beenzino?

Q: Because Illionaire’s existence is established as one type of team, I felt there would be more freedom in creating another label.

Hip: What’s the background in using ‘Ambition’ in the label name?

Q: We wanted to choose a name that is easily connected to Illionaire. Ambition was a name that came up right away and we chose it without much concern.

Hipple: You have scouted the three artists Kim Hyo-Eun, Hash Swan, and Changmo. They each have their own unique characteristics so we would like to hear how you came to recruit them.

Q: Like I mentioned above, Kim Hyo-Eun was the starting point of all our plans. Later on, Changmo came into discussion. Changmo is an artist who has done well on his own up till now but we felt at this timing we could be of help. Hash Swan was suggested by both Kim Hyo-Eun and Changmo. Of course I also gained interest in Hash Swan as an artist through Show Me the Money and although not necessarily through this ((signing to Ambition Musik)), he was someone I was about to meet anyways.

Hip: In contrast to the two artists who immediately gave an “okay” to join the label, Hash Swan didn’t reply for around a month. At that time, how did you feel?

Q: Hash Swan was receiving a lot of love calls from different companies at that time. I just emptied my mind first.

Hip: Because of the label’s name, essentially it is rumored to be connected to your own project((reference to The Quiett’s ‘AMBITIQN’ album)). (laughs)

Q: I didn’t think my album title would come this far. Anyways, Ambition Musik is part of Illionaire Records’ enterprise and implements Dok2 and my will.

Hip: We are curious about the background of gifting rolexes to the three artists of Ambition Musik. Rolexes from the beginning… (laughs)

Q: We wanted to give them so we gave them. The meaning behind it was to congratulate them on joining the label. And also watches are important objects to rappers so we felt they needed it.

Hip: It seems that Ambition Musik isn’t doing other activities with Illionaire but are the three artists of Illionaire planning on taking the roles of advisers?

Q: Illionaire is always of a free atmosphere. Fundamentally, what we want to do is support them and provide help for the label.

Hip: We know that you are preparing for your full album.  Could you say a word introducing your upcoming album?

Q: I’m diligently working to release a good album this time also. It’s a bit more delayed than I had originally planned but it won’t take too long from now.

The Quiett - 1 Life 2 Live (cover)

The Quiett on collaborating with Pete Rock, JTONG’s diss | Commentary with Hiphopplaya

Read Hiphopplaya’s short interview with The Quiett. The original commentary can be found here.

Hiphopplaya (hereafter HP): JTONG dissed you and Dok2. You didn’t show any special reaction to it. Is there a reason for this?

The Quiett (hereafter Q): We don’t really care. And we don’t hate JTONG or other rappers who diss us. We do know very well that right now is a good time to diss Illionaire, so we don’t think much of it.

HP: How did you proceed the collaboration with BBC? And, what did it mean for Illionaire and for you?

Q: Recently, the editorial shop MUE launched BBC in South Korea and asked us for a collaboration. As BBC is a brand we like to wear, it was a good opportunity. We have been saying since way back that it would be nice to collaborate with them, because if you take away just one letter from ‘Billionaire Boys Club’, it becomes ‘Illionaire Boys Club’. Our dream has become reality.

HP: What meaning is hidden behind ‘1 Life 2 Live’?

Q: The title ‘1 Life 2 Live’ was created from my song ‘한번뿐인 인생’. It is also my life’s biggest motto. I made the album based on this.

HP: The way you released it was fresh. I sense Beyoncé’s influence. Why did you choose that way of releasing it?

Q: Since I have released several albums over time, I wanted to do something I’ve never done before. It seemed fun.

HP: You have worked with Pete Rock who you have been respecting since you started making music. You must have been very happy about it?

Q: Pete Rock is one of my hiphop heroes, so working with him was a very meaningful event. It was something I’ve definitely been wanting to do one day and I am happy about it.

HP: How did you work together? You probably communicated via the Internet?

Q: The first thing I told Pete Rock’s side was just [that I wanted] a beat “which sounds like Pete Rock.” I wanted his very own funky and dreamy sound. I received a few beats and chose the one I liked the most.

HP: You have released an album, now you must be planning a concert?

Q: I cannot say any details yet but yes, it is in the planning stages.

HILITE Records comments on Keith Ape hit track “It G Ma”

Earlier this year, Keith Ape dropped the MV for his track ‘It G Ma (잊지마)’ which recently surpassed 4 million views on YouTube. Despite the continued controversy over the track “It G Ma” and the alleged “cultural appropriation” of American hip-hop (more specifically, OG Maco’s “U Guessed It”), Keith Ape’s presence in the US is now greater than ever. Korean hip-hop magazine HIPHOPPLAYA sat down with Keith Ape’s record label HILITE Records to discuss this matter.

HIPHOPPLAYA: “It G Ma” recently passed 4 million hits on YouTube. Did you ever expect this sort of outcome?

HILITE: When Keith Ape played the hook for “It G Ma” for the first time, we immediately liked it. We remember Keith Ape telling us that this will be the single of 2015.

HIPHOPPLAYA: When “It G Ma” first dropped in January, the response was positive from OGG [OG Maco’s label]. However, OG Maco more recently criticized the track through an interview and various Tweets. This was followed by a photo of both Keith Ape and OG Maco [at SXSW 2015]. What happened?

https://twitter.com/OGMaco/status/563012341194035201

HILITE: The two met recently at the SXSW festival. Despite the obvious tension in the air, the two shared a meaningful and constructive conversation. Let’s forget the past.

HIPHOPPLAYA: Can we expect a collaboration with OGG?

HILITE: When the time is right, we believe there will be a creative collaboration between the two parties.

HIPHOPPLAYA: How did Keith Ape come about performing at the SXSW festival this year?

HILITE: Keith Ape is currently supported by record label in Los Angeles called Cash Only. Great people.

HIPHOPPLAYA: Keith Ape shared the stage with Korean artists Okasian and JayAllday in New York.

HILITE: All three are part of The Cohort crew. JayAllday, who has great connections with artists overseas, reached out to others and made this possible.

HIPHOPPLAYA: How did the collaboration between Keith Ape and Azizi Gibson come about?

HILITE: After “It G Ma” blew up, Keith Ape and JuniorChef (“It G Ma” co-producer) was reached out by various artists overseas. Through FaceTime, Keith Ape shared his other music to Azizi Gibson and vice versa, which ended up in a collaboration.

HIPHOPPLAYA: I feel like this is just the beginning of his growth. Given that this was an abrupt trip to the US, what if Keith Ape decides not to return to South Korea?

HILITE: We hope that he stays busy enough overseas to remain in the US. We kept this quiet but we were reached out by several international contacts. As a Korean hip-hop artist, Keith Ape is experiencing a unique phenomena. Keith Ape needs to seize this opportunity and continue to surprise everyone while receiving the support he deserves. This is truly a miracle.

HIPHOPPLAYA: The fifth year anniversary of HILITE Records is coming up. Any plans for this year?

HILITE: Artists are working hard to complete and release their respective work, which will be celebrated with the fans on stage. Let us continue the movement together.
