On November 16, R&B artist JUNNY returns with his new single “PATIENCE.” Find out what to expect and pre-save it on Spotify!
The first and most obvious observation: Holymoley! is a mastermind. He has a seemingly innate ability to weave narrative and true emotion into each song he produces. It speaks to someone with a very deep love and respect of the craft. Working with a variety of artists who share his same passion is a testament to the breadth of his musical knowledge. His latest project as part of group Marilyn Monderland, which includes JUNNY, designer WOOGs, producer brix, and vocalists yelloasis and HOLYNN, shows that he’s always looking to expand his musical vocabulary. Always on the lookout for the next thing that will push his craft further.
This latest collaboration with JUNNY seems like a natural step in his progression. JUNNY himself has been working hard to continue to evolve as an artist. Hooking up with the likes of Holymoley! was a brilliant means to test how far he’s come in his artistry. The heavy crunch of the music, typical of the type of music being dubbed “future” or “alternative R&B,” does work well with the heaviness of JUNNY’s own vocal stylings. If last year’s “Monochrome” was anything to go by, his delivery welcomes harsher musical tones. Therefore this type of sound, gritty bass and thick use of the 808 of synth, is a perfect match for his harsh croon.
JUNNY says of the song, “I wanted to start off with a personal track that could really express how I feel currently, with life changes and choices that I am making as an adult.” If such is the case, “PATIENCE” paints a melancholy picture of someone still trying to navigate his way through several harsh realities. He constantly has to assure himself that he’ll “be all right,” meanwhile lamenting the loss of a former lover. Images of him “getting faded” as he croons at the night sky suggest he might be waiting for a savior. Perhaps for someone to pull him out of the hard memory of someone he no longer has.
Lyrically it’s not anything groundbreaking. It’s a song of love lost, a common theme among those whose weapon of choice is R&B. While not necessarily the most unique story, what it lacks in originality it makes up for with earnest passion. JUNNY is an artist who readily lays himself bare in his music. Whether the execution is always there or not isn’t always clear. But he never leaves you wondering if what he feels is genuine. When he reaches for his falsetto, taking his pain straight from the gut and shooting it to his head, there’s an unsubtle pain there. Something you can reach out and touch. Truth be told, whether his brand of R&B is your cup of tea or not, there’s no denying the raw emotion he puts into every piece of his music.
I’m anxious to hear what JUNNY has in store for us on his full-length album.
The single will be available on all outlets on November 16. You can pre-save the track on Spotify here.
