“RAP HOUSE YEAR ONE : THE DOCUMENTARY”–A Summary

|

The first-anniversary documentary of The Quiett‘s “RAP HOUSE” concert brand highlights the brand’s importance in the growing Korean hip hop scene.

Pros and Cons

The Korean hip hop scene has seen an increase in artists and popularity in the last years, which has blessed many with success and the realization of their dreams.
However, with a greater artist- and fanbase, there has been a need for bigger stages, and so, large-scale concerts and festivals have become the norm. Now, “[…] rappers handle those big concerts business-like […]. They sing the same songs the same way, it’s always the same pattern,” explains The Quiett in the RAP HOUSE documentary. Our writer Cy can testify to this, having experienced that pattern at the recent RapBeat Festival, where performances by countless artists were held on three stages at the same time.

Small but Mighty

The Quiett decided to go back to where it all started and launched a small-scale concert brand. Each show features an unsual line-up of artists: a mix of rookies and veterans, trendy and classic, independent and major. Instead of leaving it to his staff, The Quiett handpicks the artists himself, factoring in things like recent releases in order to help artists promote their music, and he even personally contacts and invites them.
Futuristic Swaver was here, then suddenly IGNITO comes onto the stage,” comments Huckleberry P at RAP HOUSE Vol. 2 as he expresses his affection for the–unexpectedly–harmonious line-up and small venue.

“We will all return to Hongdae.”

There is a certain magic about veteran rappers like P-type, Deepflow, or FANA returning to the small stage, similar to the one they started on.

Now and Forever

Meanwhile, in late August, RAP HOUSE’s radio show debuted on “Naver now” with hosts The Quiett, YUMDDA, and $IGA A. “RAPHOUSE ON AIR” airs every Thursday at 10 PM KST and is described as “a hip hop talk show that helps you discover new rappers.”

“Honestly, I don’t like it when people in the audience hold up their cell phones,” begins Huckleberry P, “[…] but today, damn it, [you] have to film this,” he says and encourages people to spread the word about RAP HOUSE, so that even more concerts of its sort will take place.

“With movements like this increasing, […] TV shows and everything aside, I think we’ll be able to find our identity, that place that we need to protect,” so The Quiett. As a fan of the genre, one cannot help but be grateful for his continuous contribution to Korean hip hop.
