HiphopKR Stands with Black Lives Matter

Black Lives Matter Always

Music is a cornerstone of black culture. R&B is a descendant of the Negro spiritual. Hip hop is the voice of black and brown youth. Both genres come from great struggle. They’re voices for the disenfranchised, the exploited, the abused, and murdered. R&B and hip hop have become worldwide influences for all cultures and people. This, of course, includes the people of South Korea. Many singers, rappers, producers, songwriters, and composers gain inspiration from these genres and as a result profit from black culture and black fans.

Move The Crowd

End of hiphop webtoon ‘Move The Crowd’, remake planned

Due to several circumstances, popular hiphop webtoon ‘Move The Crowd’ has come to a sudden end. Read on to find out why, as well as details about a remake.

Instead of the 26th chapter, the webtoon has been updated with an announcement this week. Due to monetary reasons (Naver Comics did not make ‘Move The Crowd’ an official webtoon, thus the authors are not earning any money) and health reasons (illustrator T-Rex has been working until exhaustion to finish each chapter within a week and is now experiencing health problems), the 25th chapter is the last.
Klassik and T-Rex had originally planned to work together for 20 chapters, so they have already exceeded that agreement. Klassik thanks T-Rex for working on those five additional chapters despite the situation, and says that was possible thanks to the readers’ encouragement and support.
Klassik had been hoping to remake the webtoon anyway, if Naver had proposed to make it an official webtoon which unfortunately did not happen, since he had been dissatisfied with the story’s initial progress. Now that T-Rex is leaving, the story cannot go on with completely different illustrations, so Klassik has decided to remake it from skratch. In the remake, the characters will be the same but the storyline will be very different.
After recovering his health, T-Rex will work on another webtoon. You can keep up to date with him via his Instagram, and if you’d like to know when ‘Move The Crowd’s remake is coming, Klassik’s Instagram is what you want to check.

The authors both apologize for the sudden end. Fans have shown their support in the comments, saying that they will wait for the remake, wishing T-Rex a speedy recovery, and some blaming Naver for not making ‘Move The Crowd’ an official webtoon.

[Recap] Move The Crowd – Chapter 25

Read my recap of hiphop webtoon Move The Crowd’s twenty-fifth chapter.

[x_custom_headline type=”left” level=”h1″ looks_like=”h4″]공연하고싶다 (2) (I Want to Perform on Stage (2))[/x_custom_headline]

SHYONE comes down from stage and invites Doosik and Sung-gi to dinner. On the way out, Doosik bumps into Chulmin who surprisingly is very nice to him. He tells Doosik that he enjoyed his mixtape and that they should meet again. When Jasung asks Chulmin why he is being so nice, the latter replies: “From now on, you will clearly see what happens when someone messes with me.”
Meanwhile, Sung-gi warns Doosik of Chulmin, saying that he’s pretentious and sneaky, but Doosik doesn’t want to believe it.
Sung-gi’s girlfriend Nara joins the guys at the restaurant and as Doosik talks with her, he finds out that Jiyun doesn’t have a boyfriend after all.
Next, Doosik addresses Shiwon about his blue eyes and Shiwon explains that his father is white.

At the same time, behind the concert venue: apparently, Chulmin bribed one of the organizers into hindering 2SIK from performing. The guy is only helping for money and because Chulmin promises him to put in a good word for him with his uncle. Inside, he curses Chulmin: “If it wasn’t for his uncle, I’d seriously …”

Doosik texts Jiyun and they decide to go out for dinner the next day. A while later, Sung-gi explains to Doosik that Shiwon doesn’t like talking about his parents and that Doosik shouldn’t talk about them in front of Shiwon.

At the end of the episode, we see Shiwon remembering his childhood …

  • When Nara turns up at the restaurant, Doosik hopes that Jiyun has come too.
  • Chulmin speaks informally with the older guy with the hat, which shows his rude personality and obviously angers the guy.

[Recap] Move The Crowd – Chapter 23

Read my recap of hiphop webtoon Move The Crowd’s twenty-third chapter which came out one day earlier this week.

[x_custom_headline type=”left” level=”h1″ looks_like=”h4″]공연하고싶다 (1) (I Want to Perform on Stage (1))[/x_custom_headline]

We see Jiyun practice dancing when the guy comes in who Doosik mistook as her boyfriend. We find out that he is possibly a dancer as well and is (as expected) not Jiyun’s boyfriend.
While she is wondering why Doosik doesn’t reply her anymore, her friend (and Skratch’s girlfriend) Nara notices that something’s wrong and immediately hits bull’s eye, realizing that it’s about Doosik. Jiyun confesses that he hasn’t contacted her for three weeks, so Nara suggests her to just contact him first and even invites her to the concert where Doosik and Skratch are going to perform, which Jiyun however refuses saying that Doosik is probably too busy and that she can see him later.
The guys have arrived at the concert venue, where a staff tells them that Skratch and Doosik‘s performance has been cancelled due to a tight schedule. Disappointed, the two join SHYONE in the waiting room to support him but Doosik is so tired from practicing the whole night that he falls asleep …

At the end of this chapter, the authors let us know that they will not upload a new chapter next week. The reason for this is that the following chapter will have BGM, and as previously explained (see recap of chapter 09), they need more time to prepare the music and video. However, a teaser video will be released via the authors’ Instagram (Klassik, T-Rex) and Facebook. They wish all readers a merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Move The Crowd

[Recap] Move The Crowd – Chapter 22

Read my recap of hiphop webtoon Move The Crowd’s twenty-second chapter.

[x_custom_headline type=”left” level=”h1″ looks_like=”h4″]익명성 (4) (Anonymity (4))[/x_custom_headline]

At the beginning of this chapter, we find out that Doosik actually noticed that Ji-eun was recording with her cellphone, however he just shrugs it off thinking that she probably pressed the record button on accident. He is also angry about the people who destroyed SHYONE‘s studio and decides to go and help clean up the mess.
When he arrives at the club for his part-time job, Vasco greets him and asks why he looks so down. Doosik tells him about the negative comments his song with Skratch has been getting and asks if Vasco doesn’t feel offended if people leave bad comments to his music. Vasco replies that yes, of course he feels offended. Nevertheless, negative comments are better than no comments at all. These words of advice lift Doosik’s spirit.
The next day, Skratch, Daeman, and Doosik are heading to the studio to clean up the mess. They meet Deepflow on the way who greets them friendly but stares at Daeman.
While they clean up the studio, Shiwon asks the three if there is anyone who has a grudge against them but all three negate it.
In the evening, after cleaning up, Shiwon monitors 2Sik and Skratch rehearsing. Doosik is still reading the negative comments and is especially angry at one comment that insults his mother. He swears to find the guy who wrote it and “kill” him, but Skratch and Shiwon tell him that it’s no use: those who write those comments are losers in real life who can’t even open their mouth, negative comments are better than no comments at all and he should just ignore them.
The next week, the article about 2Sik’s mixtape is posted online. Thanks to the advice he has gotten, Doosik is prepared for any negative reactions that might come but the post doesn’t get any comments at all …
At the end of this chapter, Daeman is wondering why Deepflow is friendly to everyone but stares only at him so scarily, even fears that Deepflow might hate him. However, what Deepflow actually thinks is: “I think I’ve seen that guy a few times somewhere, I have no idea who he is but he’s really handsome, perfect from his hairstyle to his eyes, nose and mouth. I’d like to make him my successor!”

[x_custom_headline type=”left” level=”h1″ looks_like=”h4″]Trivia[/x_custom_headline]

  • Doosik wonders who on earth would have anything against the super nice SHYONE, unknowing that he is the cause of the destroyed studio.
  • Vasco says to Doosik: “A real man shouldn’t get all worked up about a few negative comments,” but when he reads them, he wordlessly pats Doosik’s back.
  • When Shiwon asks if there’s anyone who has a grudge against them, Doosik thinks of Lee Youngsoo and the blonde girl.
  • The comment insulting his mother reads: “2Sik seems like a f*cking retard. He says he lived in a neighborhood where people walk around with bulletproof vests and shoot guns? Isn’t a mother who brings up her child in such a place a nutter?”
  • Here’s what Skratch says about the people who write those harrassing comments: “They’re only like that online, if they stand in front of you they can’t say a word, they’re losers. And most of them are little kids. What do you want to do? Find them, beat them and get sued for it?”
  • SHYONE’s wise words: “What can you do? Musicians need people’s interest to earn even a mere 5 won. As long as it’s no constructive criticism, just ignore the haters.”

Move The Crowd

[Recap] Move The Crowd – Chapter 21

Read my recap of hiphop webtoon Move The Crowd’s twenty-first chapter.

[x_custom_headline type=”left” level=”h1″ looks_like=”h4″]익명성 (3) (Anonymity (3))[/x_custom_headline]

The girl who approached Doosik offers to buy him food, an offer our main character cannot turn down. The girl says she once had something going on with Lee Youngsoo but is through with him now. She tells Doosik to buy drinks since she bought food so the two go for drinks and she asks Doosik lots of questions about why he came to Korea. Doosik replies enthusiastically and even invites her to his upcoming performance. As it gets late, the girls asks Doosik to walk her home and even invites him in but Doosik refuses. Just when he is about to leave, she holds him back and gives him her number (here we find out that her name is Choi Ji-eun), saying he should contact her and she’ll treat him to a meal again. However, Doosik says that he’s busy and might not have time.
A flashback follows during which it is revealed that Lee Youngsoo has actually given Ji-eun money to seduce Doosik, record all their conversations, and even take pictures …

[x_custom_headline type=”left” level=”h1″ looks_like=”h4″]Trivia[/x_custom_headline]

  • When Doosik talks about why he came to Korea, the speech bubbles read: “Ah~ When I was in the US blah blah,” “I caused trouble and blah blah,” “My mom blah blah,” “The usual stuff blah blah,” “Pitiful shit blah blah that’s why I came here.”
  • In the flashback, Youngsoo says to Ji-eun: “Go and badmouth me or something, do whatever it takes to seduce him.” So Ji-eun tells Doosik that the reason she left Youngsoo is because “He has a small one,” something Doosik finds hilarious.
This chapter’s final image shows Youngsoo (visibly pissed off) listening to the recording’s part where Ji-eun says: “He has a small one.”
  • Ji-eun uses “the usual” seduction techniques with Doosik: acting weak, making use of etiquette (“I bought food so you buy drinks!”), compliments (“You’re cool, young but commendable.”), pretending to be drunk (“So please take me home”), clinging onto him, inviting him in (“Do you want to eat ramyeon?”), sweet talk (aka aegyo: “I just want to be with you a bit longer ..”). Still, Doosik doesn’t seem very interested.
  • Youngsoo promised Ji-eun 500,000 won every time she meets up with Doosik and 2 million if she manages to take him to her place (which probably implies sleeping with him).

Move The Crowd

[Recap] Move The Crowd – Chapter 20

Read my recap of hiphop webtoon Move The Crowd’s twentieth chapter.

[x_custom_headline type=”left” level=”h1″ looks_like=”h4″]익명성 (2) (Anonymity (2))[/x_custom_headline]

At the beginning of this chapter, we see that as expected it was Ahn Chulmin‘s follower Go Jasung who destroyed SHYONE‘s studio and wrote the hateful comments to the article about 2Sik and Skratch‘s song. Meanwhile, Doosik and Sung-gi are blaming each other for being at fault for the bad comments, so Doosik goes outside for a while to avoid Sung-gi until the latter leaves for his part-time job. Doosik misses Jiyun but doesn’t dare to contact her since he still thinks that she has a boyfriend now. Then suddenly a girl starts talking to him, saying they had met before when Doosik went with a group of rappers to eat meat. She was the one sitting next to Lee Youngsoo

[x_custom_headline type=”left” level=”h1″ looks_like=”h4″]Trivia[/x_custom_headline]

  • Go Jasung explains how comments online work: “the first comment is extremely important because it has a great influence on the following ones. Of course there are many listeners who state their opinion without caring about what others say, but most of them don’t dare stating a different opinion from others. Because when they have a different opinion it either gets ignored or they are insulted as having bad hearing. Of course, these rules do not apply when music is super dope or a bunch of crap, since skills don’t lie. I am now using that mass psychology to write the first comment with hateful content and write more of them to instigate even more hateful comments.”
  • Go Jasung then adds: “while I am explaining this, I am Ahn Chulmin’s servant Go Jasung. If So Sung-gi’s nickname is “small sung-gi” (=small dick), then my nickname is “goja sung-gi” (=eunuch).”
  • This episode features the Hongdae playground.
  • We see that Doosik wrote Jiyun: “when I’m done with working on this [mixtape] later, let’s go out for a meal some time.” She agreed on the date but then Doosik was too busy to contact her and now that he has time again he thinks that she’s gotten herself a boyfriend.
  • One reader noted in the comments that the outfit of the girl who approaches Doosik is very Christmassy (green top and red pants).
