Analog Sonyeon - Sound of Field (album cover)

Analog Sonyeon returns with third full-length album ‘Sound of Field’

Rapper Analog Sonyeon has released his third LP ‘Sound of Field (현장의 소리)‘ today, both online and as a cassette tape. Support comes from Evo, Kimparkchella, Humbert, aepmah, MarginChoi, The GITA, and more.

In 2007, Analog Sonyeon released his debut album ‘정류장’ (lit.: stop/station). His first LP ‘행진’ (lit: parade) came out in 2010, followed by ‘택배왔어요 (Special Delivery)’ two years later. His previous single ‘선인장’ (lit.: cactus) came out four years ago and was his sole online release.

Today, the rapper is making a comeback with a new full-length album. Living up to his name, he is also releasing it on cassette tape, something he has been wanting to do for a long time. Only included on the cassette tape is a remastered version of ‘절망도 사치스러운 (With Koonta)‘.
Analog Sonyeon has received support with the album from his long-time colleagues Evo, Kimparkchella, Humbert, and aepmah (previously known as Soriheda). The title track features saxophonist Sungjoon Kim.

Rapper Analog Sonyeon’s third LP shares the name of The People’s Culture Movement Alliance’s 15th album that came out in 1989. As democratization began after 1987, “The People’s Culture Movement Alliance” (민중문화운동연합) started making cassette tapes with protest songs that contained the sounds of the people. Following independent concerts, the alliance lost its influence more and more. Subsequent to the democratization, the protest songs that could consistently be heard at demonstrations, activist gatherings, and on plazas became the “Sound of Field” to following generations, songs that were difficult to sing along to. Rapper Analog Sonyeon, who could be seen at plaza gatherings from time to time, paid attention to another type of “field sounds.” “Someone had to tell our generation’s ‘field sounds’ and that someone could be me,” so his thoughts. “Yes, I can do it too.”

The time from 2012 after the release of his second LP until 2016 when Soon-sil Gate took place is part of Analog Sonyeon’s album. In his own words he includes what he has heard at plazas, rallies, on stages, in alleys and in between. In 2018, the movie ‘1987: When the Day Comes’ is showing in cinemas. Pondering on its meaning, Analog Sonyeon releases his third full-length album, reminding of the old protest songs by releasing it on cassette tape. When someone sarcastically remarks that hiphop has become “cool,” remember this rapper that always went to the plaza gatherings. Even though he did not stand on stage, he was one of the people at the weekly candlelight rallies at Gwanghwamun. And you can firmly believe that the tracks on his album bring a humble but big amount of strength to everyone who shed sweat and lit candles with frozen hands.

Along with the album, Analog Sonyeon also revealed the music video for the title track ‘해녀‘ (lit.: female diver). The artist comments: “Most of the female divers are elder women. On land, they hurt here and there, but in the water they swim around freely. When I rapped at the 10th Jonggak Music Festival of the Korean Council of Centers for Independent Living, I asked a sign language interpreter to interpret my lyrics. On that day, the song ‘해녀’ came to my mind together with the music video. We are all divers who dive freely in their own sea.”
