Microdot

Review: Microdot ‘Prophet’ Showcase 2017

Read our guest writer Amy‘s review for Microdot’s ‘Prophet’ showcase which was held in Platform 61.

Platform 61, located in a refurbished parking lot of Changdong, acts as “a cultural hotspot” and venue for local talents. It just happened to be the perfect venue for Microdot‘s first ever showcase. The cozy container complex contains a live stage hall for artists to perform, giving this showcase event a warm and personal concert-type feel. I totally loved the ambience of this showcase. From the venue itself, to the colorful stage lighting, the performances (of course!) and even the glowing bottles of Mountain Dew which acted as handheld lights!

The ‘Prophet’ showcase was a very well-organized event with an audience consisting of dedicated fans and people close to Microdot, all showing their support for his new album and first ever live showcase event.

As a New Zealander myself, this event was very close to my heart. I could somehow feel more connected with Microdot through his music than I can with other artists and I think a lot of other multicultural fans of Microdot can relate to this connection. Many of Microdot’s new songs talk about his roots and upbringing in New Zealand (“representing New Zealand wherever I go” – Track No.17 ‘Pinnerdown’) it’s refreshing to see such a humble artist who stays in touch with his roots. He even collaborated with New Zealand based artist Donell Lewis for two tracks, as well as other Korean-New Zealand artists; Beenzino, Superbee, and his brother Sanchez.

Throughout his performances Microdot interacted a lot with fans and guests, constantly expressing his thanks for the people who supported him in his journey. Microdot brought out a variety of guests (including actors Lee Duk Hwa and Lee Kyeong Kyu). Whilst all his performances were on point, one that really stood out to me was when he brought out his brother (Sanchez) to perform their new track “New Day”, they have a great stage presence both individually and together. Also, Microdot’s performance of “If I Don’t Have You” where he shows off his vocals as well as rapping was very impressive and took me by surprise! Other guests on the day included; Ravi of VIXX, SUL, Superbee, Han All, YDG, and Boi B.

Some of my personal favorite tracks from the Prophet album are:

  • 6482 (Feat. Superbee)
  • You Need Love (Feat. Donell Lewis)
  • Pinnerdown (Feat. Donell Lewis)
  • Get Don (Feat. Don Mills)
  • If I Don’t Have You
  • New Day (Feat. Sanchez)
  • No Stoppin’

The showcase went on for just over 2 and a half hours, but not once did Microdot fall short in any way, in each performance he gave 100%. About half way through the event Microdot had a question and answer time, answering questions which had been written prior to the event by a few fans. Following the last performance, he also made time to sign CDs for fans. It’s clear to see how much time and effort Microdot worked on preparing both his recent album and this showcase event.

I also want to thank Culture Think for their hard work and the opportunity to attend this showcase!
