Yes, as expected, this time’s K-Fan News are mainly about Show Me The Money 4. Read on to find out what Korean fans have to say about SMTM4’s first episode!

These days, just like us, the Korean fans on hiphop communities are discussing SMTM4 and its contestants.

One fan said he thinks that Kim Minjae has a good voice, writes good lyrics and might be like Chamane, while another fan couldn’t agree: “He only has a good voice, that’s it.” (source)

Along with this picture (click on it for original size), one fan brought it to our attention that Basick was on SMTM4’s first episode for 0.5 seconds! He said “He was really hard to find but let’s cheer on Basick! 0.5 seconds swag!” Other fans agreed that it was a pity he didn’t appear longer on the show. (source)

A lot of fans expressed their sadness about Rhythm Power’s Haengzoo being eliminated. Someone said that if he had rapped before Geegooin, he might not have been eliminated. That moment was the saddest of the first episode for many. (source 1, 2)

Seventeen’s Vernon was also a popular topic. People were surprised about his young age and impressive skills, praised this track off the mixtape and of course his looks, calling him “Mixed-race God” and mentioning that he looks a bit like Super Junior’s Donghae. (source 1, 2)

A fan of New Champ wrote a post saying he expects him to pass the first round next week, to which others replied: “That would be great.” (source)

Since quite a lot of idol rappers participated, the fans discussed this topic too, quite favorably though! One fan posted on a community board: “I have never been interested in idol rappers and never noticed them. However, through SMTM, many people’s opinions about them changed for the better.” Replies to this mentioned BtoB’s Ilhoon, Zico, GD, Rap Monster, Ravi, and Minho, while the most real reply (in my opinion) was: “There are idol rappers who suck and there are underground rappers who suck,” implying that ‘under’ and ‘mainstream’ don’t have anything to do with a rapper’s skills. The Korean hiphop fans think that it might be time to let go of prejudices against idol rappers.
On another board, someone said “All those who dissed idol rappers on SMTM4’s first episode couldn’t rap at all. Or did they only show the ones who sucked?” to which someone else replied, “Those who are really good don’t say that they’re better than idol rappers.” (source 1, 2)

Contestant Jung Sangsoo who already participated in season three was called ‘real hiphop’ and ‘more hiphop than anyone else in Korea’ by the majority of Korean fans, they seem greatly impressed by his rap skills and his ‘hiphop looks’, calling him “God Sangsoo” and even compared him to 2Pac!? (source 1, 2)

Of course, Black Nut was an issue as well. While some were in awe and couldn’t say more than “Oh my .. I’m about to cry … for real … that freakin’ bastard God Daewoong,” another fan said that he does not like how Black Nut directly dissed Zico ‘right in his face’ and let down his pants. He finds Black Nut entertaining ‘only’. This caused a heated discussion, where fans of Black Nut praised his rap skills and his exceptional character. And one person observed that Just Music artists have quite a lot of dedicated fans. (source 12)

BewhY was briefly mentioned here and there too, as an artist the fans are looking forward to seeing on the show.

All in all, the overall opinions on SMTM4 are to just enjoy it as a ‘show’ and not take it too seriously, because hiphop fans have often stated their anger with Show Me The Money “not being hiphop”. Now, fans said that several things about the show might be upsetting, especially for hiphop fans, but that one should just have fun watching it without thinking too much, as it is “just a show”. On another note, a few Korean fans were wondering about upcoming albums: “Now that E SENS’ album isn’t coming out and Keith Ape is gone, there is only Okasian left for me.” Rumor (?) has it that Okasian is releasing an album in October, someone jokingly (?) said that the title would be “Show Me the Ghetto”. A fan waiting for Simon D‘s album was worried because he saw Simon on another variety show: “He should work on his album instead of doing that.” Someone assured this fan, saying that on Tablo’s Dreaming Radio, Simon D said that he has finished his work on the album and that Gray is doing the remaining work. Unfortunately, Gray is very busy so things are going slow, but Simon D has cared so much for his album that he even declined featuring on ‘Born Hater’ and ‘Burj Khalifa’! Simon D’s album might come out some time in summer. With Verbal Jint’s ‘Go Hard’ hopefully coming soon too, we are looking forward to more great Khiphop albums!
