Don Malik To Perform At SXSW 2017

Earlier this week, Korean hip-hop label DAZE ALIVE announced that Don Malik will be holding his first international performance at SXSW 2017 in Austin, Texas.  Here’s everything you need to know about this talented artist! 

Don Malik (real name: Insup Moon), who was inspired by Drunken Tiger to pursue Korean hip-hop music, entered the underground scene in May 2014 with his mixtape Hashtag[#].  As a rookie praised for his incredible lyricism at such a young age, he attributes his lyrical abilities to his musical influences hip-hop veterans E-SENS and JJK.  Only six months after his mixtape release, he signed to DAZE ALIVE, an independent hip-hop label headed by Jerry.K.  Watch the music video for his debut single “The Way I Am (ft. In April 2015, Don Malik collaborated with veteran producer Mild Beats on an EP project titled The Navel String (탯줄) and released music videos for their tracks “About Muse” and “90’s Freestyle.”  The veteran producer and new-coming lyricist combination resulted in a boom bap filled EP which was praised by the Korean hip-hop community.

But the collaborations didn’t stop there.  In April 2016, Don Malik formed a team with Kima Tobla (who produced his debut single “The Way I Am”) under the name Tribeast and released their single titled “Come in to the World” as a preview of their album Tribeast.  This album was later nominated for “Best Rap/Hiphop Album” at the 14th Korean Music Awards.

In addition to being featured on producer Rosemond‘s album Emotions in Motion, Don Malik recently made an appearance on Mic Swagger Season 2 with his label-mate SLEEQ, where the duo demonstrated their technical rap skills and lyricism through the cypher.  Following their appearance on Mic Swagger, Don Malik and SLEEQ released a joint mixtape titled FOMMY HILTIGER on January 20, 2017.  Listen to the mixtape:

Most recently, Don Malik released his new single titled “Mowgli“ which was produced by Korean hip-hop artist JUSTHIS.  The track “Mowgli” is about how Don Malik, who was born in and grew up in the “concrete jungle” of Seoul, survives as someone with qualities that are different than the rest.  Watch the music video:
